SDPC Mourns Loss of Bus Companion

Mary Lee, an SDPC bus companion in the Pickens area, died September 2. Beginning as a bus patrol/bus companion in the Liberty area, she rode the same route for the last 6 years with students from Simpson Academy, Gettys Middle, and the Pickens-area schools. Our sympathy goes out to her family and friends and to all the students whose lives she touched.

Hunt Receives "Overall Excellent Evaluation"
Following executive session on August 23, the School District of Pickens County Board of Trustees publicly expressed its strong approval of Dr. Henry Hunt's performance and the overall stable leadership he has provided the district during his first year as superintendent.

After reaffirming the board’s strong partnership with Dr. Hunt as they work together during difficult budget times to strengthen the educational programs offered to Pickens County students, Board Chairman Jim Shelton stated, “Dr. Hunt received an overall excellent evaluation. We feel very fortunate that Dr. Hunt is our superintendent.  He is known as a man of character and enjoys great respect in the community and amongst our staff, which has translated into increased support of our school system this past year.  We are pleased that Dr. Hunt demonstrated this past year that he is committed to putting the good of the district at the forefront of all that he does."   News Release

SDPC Receives LLR Report
SDPC has received an investigation summary from South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation (LLR).  The summary is the first official, written report the district has received after inviting LLR to inspect construction sites for undocumented workers earlier in the year.

According to the August 27th report, all general contractors were found to be in compliance.  All but five subcontractors were found to be in compliance, and those five had a total of 35 illegal aliens employed.

“These are serious violations,” said Dr. Henry Hunt, superintendent.  “We have continually stressed to our general contractors that the district expects, and our contracts require, general contractors and all subcontractors to follow all laws and regulations in constructing our schools.  We will be consulting with our attorneys to determine appropriate action.”
Parents May Request Emergency Text Messages
Through ParentLink phone calls and e-mail messages, the School District of Pickens County and your child’s school provide timely information about school events, absences, lunch account balances and inclement weather.  In case of emergencies, we can also send text messages—if parents request the service.  Parents who request texts are responsible for all associated charges.

Parents will continue receiving ParentLink calls; however, those who wish to receive a text (in emergencies only) in addition to the phone call must provide information.  You can find the request form for text messaging on the SDPC website Forms page under "ParentLink."  Return the completed form to your child’s school. To make sure you receive calls, e-mails, and texts, please notify your child's school if any of your contact information changes.

Providing the option of emergency text messages is another way for SDPC to communicate clearly and frequently with our families.
Edwards, Shelton Recognized for Leadership Training
SDPC Board Members Judy Edwards and Jim Shelton have earned Level 2 recognition by the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) for achievement in the association’s 2009-2010 Boardmanship Institute.  Dr. Henry Hunt, superintendent, presented the two trustees with certificates and pins at the August 23 board meeting.

The SCSBA Boardmanship Institute, established in 1982, offers a year-round training curriculum to help board members develop skills and stay abreast of state and national educational issues. Workshops focus on school law, school finance, legislation, improving board operations, leadership for improving student achievement, and other timely topics.  Board members can achieve up to six levels of recognition by earning points that are accrued annually from July through June for participation in statewide conferences and training provided onsite in their districts.

Congratulations, Mrs. Edwards and Mr. Shelton!  News Release

Have You Registered for Our Teacher Websites?
The process of integrating teacher Web pages with PowerSchool, our new student database system, is now complete!  We encourage all families to use our websites and become partners with teachers in helping students achieve success.

Teachers are working on their Web pages so that students and parents can access assignments, grades, and class information.  To use the many resources on our websites, you must first create a parent account through the SDPC site or any of our school sites.

If you experienced problems creating an account, logging in, or seeing your student’s classes before Monday, August 23, please try again.  Users who still experience problems should contact the school for assistance. Please contact teachers with questions about their Web pages.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.  Read more about resources on our websites (Daily Activity Notifications, Combined Calendars, Student Storage Space, Curriculum Overviews)

Families May Apply Online Quickly and Safely for Free, Reduced Price School Meals
The School District of Pickens County has announced its policy for free and reduced price meals for children served in schools under the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program.  Children from families whose income is at or below the levels shown may be eligible for free or reduced price meals.

Also, we are pleased to offer the option of applying online for free and reduced price meals.  Through the new Student Nutrition Services website, parents may apply safely, securely, and privately to determine their eligibility.   A new meal application is required every year, so we encourage families to begin submitting applications online now.

Families without Internet access may use computers at all Pickens County public libraries or at the Adult Learning Center in Easley.  Clemson Community Care also has a computer and assistance available to parents wishing to complete the application online. News Release
